Dr. Warshi Dandeniya is a senior lecturer and presently the Head of the Department of Soil Science, Faculty of Agriculture, University of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka. She has a B.Sc. in Agriculture, M.Phil. in Soil Science and a Ph.D. in Soil Science. Her research focuses on understanding the effects of environmental perturbation on soil microorganisms and soil microbial community dynamics on nutrient cycling in cropping systems. Dr. Dandeniya's lab group is presently engaged in developing botanical nitrification inhibitors to reduce fertilizer wastage, formulating biofertilizers to reduce inorganic fertilizer requirement in paddy sector of the country, assessing the effect of poultry farming on distribution of antibiotic resistance determinants in the environment and documenting the diversity of bacteria and fungi in forest soils of Sri Lanka using a metagenomic approach. Her research programs have been funded by National Research Council of Sri Lanka, Biodiversity Secretariat of Sri Lanka, Peradeniya University Research Grants, and International Foundation for Science (IFS) - Sweden.

The award reflects the Chinese Academy of Sciences' strong support to TWAS and, more generally, seeks to build scientific capacity in the developing world. Bai Chunli, president of both the Chinese Academy and TWAS, played a central role in the creation of the TWAS-Siwei Cheng Award.

Munasinghe is founder chairman, Munasinghe Inst. for Development; Chairman, Presidential Expert Committee on Sustainable Sri Lanka 2030 Vision; distinguished guest prof., Peking Univ; and hon. senior adviser, Sri Lanka Govt. He has degrees in physics, engg. and economics from Cambridge U., UK; MIT, USA, and McGill and Concordia U., Canada. He was sr. energy adviser to the Pres. of Sri Lanka; advisor, US President's Council on Envir. Quality; sr. adviser/director, World Bank; vice chair, Intergov. Panel on Climate Change; chairman, Computer and Inf. Tech. Council, Sri Lanka; and chancellor, Int. Water Acad., Oslo. He shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize and won many major research awards, incl. 2021 Blue Planet Prize Laureate; Eminence in Engineering; award, Institution of Engineers, Sri Lanka, 2014; Lifetime outstanding achievement in energy award from President of Sri Lanka, 2016; Officer of French Legion of Honour decoration from French President, 2018; and highest national award "Deshmanya" from Sri Lanka President, 2019. He has authored over 120 scientific books and 350 papers. He is fellow of 10 science academies, and editorial board member of 21 journals.

Gunatilaka (PhD and DIC 1970-74, Imperial College, London) is professor and director of the Natural Products Center, School of Natural Resources and the Environment, U. of Arizona (UA). His was previously: Academic visitor, Imperial College, London; research associate at Stanford, USA; professor and head, Dept. of Chem., U. of Peradeniya, Sri Lanka; visiting professor and Snr. research scientist at Virginia Polytechnic Inst. and State U., USA. His awards include: Bikaji Framji Kahn Gold Medal for Academic Excellence, U. of Ceylon; Inst. of Chem. (Ceylon) Gold Medal; Sri Lanka President's Gold Medal for Scientific Achievement, UA Asian American Assoc. Outstanding Faculty Award, and UA Leading Edge Researcher Award for innovative research. He is a fellow of the Natl .Acad. of Sciences, Sri Lanka. He has published +250 peer-reviewed papers and delivered +100 invited lectures in 18 countries.

Siriwardana, Halka Vidanalage Yamuna Deepani

Biodata
Dr Siriwardana was a TWAS young affiliate (2009-2014) from Sri Lanka and completed the doctoral training in Sri Lanka and in UK (Liverpool School of tropical Medicine and Hygiene) under a commonwealth doctoral scholarship. She holds the first Sri Lankan PhD on human leishmaniasis, a newly established health issue in Sri Lanka and her main research interest continues on clinical, parasitological and immunological aspects of leishmaniasis. Her work so far has paved the way for the development of the National Action Plan on leishmaniasis, resulted in over 20 scientific publications, over 70 abstracts and many book chapters on the same. She has played a pioneering role in establishing the first patient clinic, diagnostic laboratory, research techniques under TWAS science exchange program and in designing and establishing a laboratory training course for government technical officers on leishmaniasis diagnosis in Sri Lanka. She is also a recipient of many awards including presidential awards, Dr. SC Paul oration (Sri Lanka, 2014) and other research awards.
