TWAS opening ceremony – live from Vienna

The Austrian Academy of Sciences will livestream Wednesday’s gala opening ceremonies, award announcements, and keynote lecture at the TWAS General Meeting in Vienna.

Those unable to attend TWAS’s 26th Annual Meeting in Vienna, Austria, this week will be able watch its opening ceremonies live Wednesday starting at 4:00 p.m., Central European Time.

The livestream will include statements by Austrian President Heinz Fischer; Austrian Academy of Sciences President Anton Zeilinger; TWAS President Bai Chunli; Giorgio Marrapodi, Italy's ambassador to Austria; UNESCO’s Assistant Director-General for Natural Sciences Flavia Schlegel (via video); and Reinhold Mitterlehner, Austria's vice-chancellor and federal minister of Science, Research and Economy. It will also feature several major prize announcements, including the TWAS-Lenovo Science Prize, one of the most prestigious awards given to scientists in the developing world.

Immediately following the opening ceremonies, the livestream will broadcast the keynote address by Albert Louis Sachs, a leading figure in South Africa's historic break from apartheid. Sachs will focus on the relationship between sustainable development and poverty reduction. His lecture is scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m.
